Transition at Mowden Schools
At Mowden Schools, transition plays an important role in ensuring that pupils are supported effectively and that their needs are met throughout their education. Above all, we want our children to feel a strong sense of belonging, to believe in themselves, and to become the very best they can be.
Starting in Reception
Mrs Bainbridge, Deputy Headteacher, leads on transition into Mowden Infant School. Following National Offer Day for primary school allocations, all parents and carers will be contacted with detailed information about arrangements for starting at Mowden Infant School. This includes guidance on school uniform, the structure and timings of the school day, and ways in which families can support a smooth start to school life.
Mrs Bainbridge works closely with nurseries and pre‑schools to ensure a positive and well‑supported transition for every child. During the summer term, all children joining our school have opportunities to visit, helping them to become familiar with their new environment, staff and life at Mowden
We work closely in partnership with families to ensure every child feels settled, confident and excited about beginning their learning journey at Mowden.
Year to Year Transitions
At Mowden, we place great value on supporting pupils as they transition from one year group to the next. We want all pupils to feel a strong sense of belonging so that they can reach their full potential.
Class teachers work collaboratively to ensure continuity in learning and pastoral care. Information about pupils’ academic progress, strengths, and any additional needs is carefully shared to support a smooth and positive transition.
Enhanced Transition
For pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), or for those who may require additional support with transition, enhanced transition arrangements are carefully planned to ensure every child feels well supported.
Mrs Taylor, SENDCo, works closely with pupils, families and staff to tailor transition support to individual needs. This may include additional visits, bespoke transition plans, meetings with parents and carers, and close liaison with nurseries, pre‑schools or previous settings where appropriate.
Staff work in partnership with families to ensure that any concerns are addressed, and that continuity of support is in place from the very start. Our aim is to provide a calm, reassuring, and positive transition experience so that pupils are able to settle quickly and thrive in their new setting at Mowden.
Transition to Secondary School
As our Year 6 pupils prepare for the next chapter of their educational journey, we provide comprehensive support to help them transition confidently to secondary school.
Transition days across Darlington usually take place over two to three days during the summer term, depending on the secondary school. Transition leads from local secondary schools regularly visit Mowden to meet with pupils, answer questions, and support preparation for the move. At the end of their time at Mowden, pupils transfer to their secondary school feeling well prepared, confident, resilient, and supported for future success.
